FAQ’S
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a typical day look like for a student-athlete on a golf team?
Let me start by reviewing a typical week. A typical week would include team workouts likely 3 times a week and will probably be early morning around 6 or 7 AM. Then there will be 2 or 3 rounds of 18 holes qualifying that week along with 2 or 3 team practices. Every coach is different in how they want to balance the week between 18 hole qualifying days and team practice. In terms of a typical day, if you have morning workouts, you’ll have an hour workout early in the morning. Then you’ll go to class between 8-12 PM. Team practice or 18 hole qualifying will take place in the afternoon. But, there are some teams that like to have their team practice in the morning, and if that’s the case, you would have afternoon classes and perhaps late afternoon workouts.
What qualities do coaches look for in recruits beyond golf scores and rankings?
Coaches love players who are competitive. They also look for hard working, determined and motivated individuals. Being disciplined, studious and organized are also attractive. Coaches will also look for players who can display leadership qualities as well as someone can be a team player.
How much tournament travel is involved?
According to the NCAA, coaches are allowed to have 24 days of regular season competition. Exceptions to those 24 days of competition are tournaments in Hawaii and post season tournaments. Knowing that there are 24 days of competition to work with, coaches will schedule various two day or three day events to get to 24 days of competition. Two day competitions have the 36-18 hole format while three day competitions are 18-18-18 each day. So, a coach could schedule 12 two day tournaments or 8 three day tournaments, but normally, it’s a blend, so perhaps 4 three day competitions and 6 two day competitions which will total 24. Days of travel will typically occur two days before the start of competition, so you’re looking to be traveling for four days on 36-18 hole competitions and five days for 18-18-18 hole competitions.
What does each program do to help players improve and prepare for the next level?
Every player is at different stages in their golf games and different stages of the NCAA recruiting process. My job will be to get an understanding of where you are as a golfer, and draw on my experience to help you improve where you need to improve. I am a big believer in a growth mindset, so let’s grow together in your golf journey!
